Sunset Empire Transportation District (SETD) staff recently utilized the Busing on the Lookout training they have received to recognize and respond to the warning signs of human trafficking.A call was made by a concerned parent to the Transportation District’s office alerting them about a pair of young runaways. A second call was made from the Clatsop County Sheriff’s office to the Transportation District’s office also alerting them about a pair of young runaways. A District staff member quickly reviewed the district video tapes to see if the suspected runaways had visited the transit center to board a bus, and saw they had. She informed the driver supervisor who quickly alerted the bus driver that the children were on the bus. The bus driver confirmed that both children were on the bus headed to Portland to meet a “friend” they had just met on the internet. The bus was on a scheduled layover in Rainier when the local police responded.
“SETD has been dedicated to having an ongoing annual training program for being on the lookout for human trafficking for our entire staff and our Board of Commissioners for several years, and it really has made a difference. This is not the first time we have notified the authorities about possible human trafficking”, Said Executive Director Jeff Hazen
“The children are safe and sound and back in Clatsop County,” said Jennifer Geisler, Chief Operation Officer for Sunset Empire. “A big shout out to all those involved, including everyone who continues to keep their eyes and ears open to possible human trafficking in and around the bus, bus shelters and Transit Centers. Today we were lucky that we could help and keep these very young kids safe.”
