Become a Bus Driver Trainee!

Sunset Empire Transportation District is seeking reliable and customer-focused individuals to join our team as bus driver trainees. This position is designed for applicants who do not yet have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) but are interested in becoming professional transit operators.

The district will pay for CDL training and support successful candidates through the process of obtaining a Class B CDL with passenger and air brake endorsements.

This is an opportunity to begin a career in public transportation while receiving paid training and professional development.


Responsibilities

  • Participate in CDL training and successfully obtain a Class B CDL with passenger and air brake endorsements
  • Safely operate a bus or transit vehicle to transport passengers
  • Perform required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections
  • Maintain a clean and orderly vehicle interior
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with passengers
  • Provide excellent customer service to the public
  • Follow all traffic laws and safety procedures
  • Report accidents, incidents, or mechanical concerns promptly
  • Maintain a safe and respectful environment for passengers

Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Clean driving record
  • Ability to obtain a Class B CDL with passenger and air brake endorsements
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to interact positively with passengers and the public
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Must pass a background check and drug screening

Fare-Free Day on Tuesday, March 24, 2026

Sunset Empire Transportation District is celebrating Ridership Appreciation Day on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

The district will offer fare-free rides on all routes within Clatsop County on March 24 as a gesture of appreciation to bus riders and the community.

The public is invited to drop by the Astoria Transit Center, 900 Marine Drive, Astoria, Oregon, between 9 and 11 a.m. on March 24 for refreshments.

Ridership Appreciation Day falls on SETD’s anniversary. The district was created on March 24, 1993.

Tillamook County Transportation District expands service on all routes starting Sunday, January 18.

The following service improvements and new services begin Sunday January 18th, 2026.

  • Reinstatement of seven day a week transit service
  • Added Dial-A-Ride capacity
  • Overall 25%+ service hours increase!
  • Direct Route 3 service to the new Nehalem Bay Health Center in Wheeler
  • 40% more trips on Route 2 (Netarts-Oceanside) and Route 6 (Port of Tillamook Bay)
  • Reinstatement of the 4:55 AM Route 5 roundtrip to/from Portland (transfer to TriMet’s Red Line at Sunset Transit Center in Beaverton for car-free travel to PDX)
